ABOUT THE ARTIST
Juan Stoppani & Jean-Yves Legavre (1935, Buenos Aires / 1946, Paris)
My art is popular, I am inspired by what I see on the street, the graffiti on the walls, then I pass it through geometry… all my work has to do with geometry.
Stoppani is a sculptor, painter, architect and designer, who took part in the pop movement of the Di Tella Institute in Buenos Aires during the 60s. He met Legavre in Paris in 1969 while they were collaborating with the playwright Copi in a play about Eva Perón directed by Alfredo Arias. They lived in Paris for 40 years, ventured into fashion (designing for Yves Saint Laurent and Chanel), set design, theater, opera, painting and ceramics. They now live and work together in Buenos Aires.
Disruptive Art + Quality Craftspeople = Innovative & Collectible Design
LALANA is an applied arts brand born from the desire to combine innovative designs by contemporary artists with traditional techniques and noble raw materials. The three “A's” of LA-LA-NA come together in an interdisciplinary weaving of Applied Arts from Argentina, forging from this synergy the creation of signature works. The differential value of our brand is generated by fusing art, design and crafts in the realization of exclusive collectible objects, both decorative and functional.
LALANA unveils a catalogue of unique designs, including pieces conceived from sketches, prototypes or pre-existing iconic works by pioneering artists, resurfacing modern designs from the past, put into dialogue with new proposals by a younger generation. We are inspired by the project "Outside the Box - Consumer Art Center” that Jorge Romero Brest founded in 1970 after directing the Visual Arts Center of the Di Tella Institute, epicenter of multidisciplinary art in Argentina at the time.
LALANA is a brand founded by Florencia Cherñajovsky, a curator interested in the relations between art and design. She worked for several years in the Curatorial department of contemporary art at the Centre Pompidou and is currently developing an interdisciplinary three-year program for Madre Museum in Italy.
LALANA rugs are hand dyed and hand woven in Argentina by a community of families in non-factory environments. Following ancient production techniques of craftsmanship. With 100% high-quality hand-spun llama wool sourced from Jasimaná, Salta Province, Argentina (3.842 MASL).
It takes about one month to complete each unique piece. We do not use machines in any part of the process, since we do not intend to make identical pieces, but rather highlight the difference made entirely by hand. The technique used is the so-called "weft face", made on traditional looms typical of the north of our country. It is a plain, highly resistant weave with adaptability to different spaces. Textile traditions constitute a very important part of the Argentine cultural patrimony. It is fundamental for us to protect and preserve this as well as to promote new creative possibilities.
The llama is a native South American camelid, unique in the world. This natural fiber is found in the north of Argentina, in a small town called Jasimaná, where thanks to the climatic conditions and altitude, a unique kind of llama is bred. The fibers are spun by hand by an association of families who are dedicated to the breeding and the preservation of this animal, as well as the quality selection of the fleece, making sure that the entire value chain is sustainable. This special fiber has outstanding attributes: quality, great softness as well as hypoallergenic properties. This allows the fabrics to be delicate as well as resistant, being able to last for many years in perfect condition.
